Femininity from the Inside Out

In the last few years, the Lord has taken me on a beautiful journey of finding myself more as a feminine woman of God.

When I was a young girl, I used to think femininity meant sexuality. So, I dressed that way: “sexual.” I found myself often trying to get attention by what I wore externally. When I was around 21, the Lord convicted me of this, and I was ashamed of how I had dressed and changed my style completely. I got rid of form-fitting and revealing clothes and wore baggy shirts and more masculine styles of clothing to hide my figure.

But in my correction and shame, I overcorrected. I was not dressing feminine at all, but rather “frumpy” in order not to draw any attention to myself.

In the last several years, I have learned there is balance.

The Bible says “​… for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

Now we know, this passage is referring to the Prophet Samuel looking at David’s stature compared to his brothers, but I think it shows us something about God. He looks at the heart.

It is not about what you wear, but about your heart behind it.

What might be okay for one to wear, for another, it might not be. People grow up in different cultures, and because of that, what is acceptable in a certain culture may not be acceptable in another. Our job is not to judge what a man is wearing outwardly but to see hearts and to seek God’s wisdom regarding our own clothing.

Maybe we ask the Lord, “What should I wear today?”

As your feminine dress could bring power.

We see this with Esther, as she chose to wear her royal garments before seeing the king to make her big “ask.” We also see this earlier in the book of Esther, where she asked the custodian what to wear before her first meeting with the king. She knew what the king liked her to wear, so she knew what to wear to be presentable before him and win favor with him. Ultimately, her feminine positioning helped her to become Queen and save her people. 

There is power in femininity, if it is with the right heart. God will use anything we put in His hands, even a simple “How should I dress today?” can open up certain conversations or create a prophetic picture.

I used to run an in-person ministry school for women, and at the school, I told the women to ask God what to wear. One week, everyone, without communicating with each other, walked in wearing blue and purple. All of us looked at each other and knew God was saying something to us. What are the odds that 15 people would all be wearing the same color clothing? So, we sought the Lord, and he began to speak to us a beautiful message about royalty. This message would not have been delivered to us if these women had not all yielded to the Holy Ghost that day on what to wear.

God’s Femininity has the power to save lives, open positions, and deliver prophetic messages to a group of people.

So, the next time you get dressed, don’t think “what should I wear,” but instead seek God and see what He desires. 

I have seen God change my heart from hiding my femininity to embracing it as a beautiful expression of His love. I hope you find the same.

There is a certain beauty in embracing being a woman. To each woman that will look different. But to women who struggle with fear of wearing something inappropriate, I would say, “Don’t hide your womanhood, refine it”. 

Maybe even ask God what clothes you should buy in the first place, so you know you have a closet of things He has desired for you to have. Maybe ask Him how to do your makeup or hair, if you want to go further. As you start doing this, you will start to see the woman He wants you to be. But that is just the external. We then must take it a step further to work on our heart.

As we said before, God saw David’s heart, not his stature, when he chose him to become king. We know that David was “a man after God’s own heart”, so we must seek God’s heart on matters in our lives, and as we mature, we must seek God’s heart on others’ lives as well, to help them know His heart for them. So, in the same way we ask God “what to wear,” we should ask God “what do you want to say to me?” having consistent communication with Him, so we really let Him refine us and go from that “glory to glory” He desires us to.

My hope is that you embrace external and internal femininity with God as He desires. Seeking His heart for your dress, mind, and heart. You can be the feminine woman He created you to be. All you have to do is ask Him how.
